THE NEED FOR LIVESTRONG® AT THE YMCA
No one experiences cancer in the same way; perseverance through cancer is a remarkable accomplishment. You want to begin to heal and reclaim your health, but how do you start that process? At the Y, cancer survivors continue their journey of recovery by gaining strength and support in a program created specifically for survivors. The LIVESTRONG® Foundation and the Skagit Valley Family YMCA have partnered to offer a FREE 12-week physical activity and wellness program called LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for adults who have cancer or have completed active cancer treatment.
LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA has helped thousands of cancer survivors move beyond cancer in spirit, mind, and body.
Participants in the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program meet twice a week for 90 minutes for twelve weeks.
The program includes guest speakers and a personalized fitness program to:
• Build muscle mass and strength
• Increase flexibility and endurance
• Improve confidence and self esteem
• Learn about wellness
• Develop stress reduction techniques
• Discover ways to continue healthy habits after the program has ended
The program creates a tight knit sense of community where you can feel safe and comfortable. The space works as a support group as well where you interact with others whom have been affected by cancer and share your stories.
Medical studies have shown that moderate levels of appropriate physical activity can reduce fatigue, boost self-esteem, and improve muscle strength and physical endurance in individuals following cancer treatment. Cancer survivors themselves are increasingly aware of the positive impact that moderate physical activity, supportive relationships, and stress reduction techniques can have on their quality of life.
The staff of LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA have been specially trained to work with survivors and patients alike and follow the guidelines set out by American College of Sports Medicine and American Cancer Society. They will work with you and address your personal physical concerns in an effective and safe way. They will also offer a safe space to share your story and help understand what you’re going through.
LIVESTRONG® serves people affected by cancer and empowers them to take action against the world’s leading cause of death. Created as the Lance Armstrong Foundation in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong, the Foundation offers additional services and resources for survivors at LIVESTRONG.org.
Due to limited class space registration is required.
The Spring Session will be held from 1:00pm-2:30pm every Tuesday & Thursday from April 11 to June 29.
