Oasis Teen Shelter
The YMCA Oasis Teen Shelter began in 1996 as the brainchild of Skagit Homeless Youth Task Force. The task force identified the location in the winter of 1997 and spent months readying the facility. In May, Oasis opened its doors; and in 2002 it became part of the YMCA. Oasis is a licensed six bed emergency shelter for runaway and homeless youth ages 13 to 17. It is located within a few blocks of the YMCA, Mount Vernon High School and the bus station. Oasis provides two warm meals, a shower, access to laundry, a clothing bank, and toiletries. The shelter is intended to be a short term living arrangement, with an encouraging staff actively involved in finding long term housing solutions for youth.
Oasis Daylight Center is our new drop-in center for youth ages 13 to 21. We are open every day (even Saturday and Sundays) from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and closed on Fridays. The Daylight Center offers food, clothing, showers, laundry and access to case management. The Daylight Center offers various supportive classes and workshops such as GED prep, employment readiness programs, life skills and more. It is located in the house above the teen shelter on 125 North 5th Street.

A Typical Night - After learning shelter rules and giving information about themselves, youth learn about resources that could help them. Afterward they have free time to eat, read, socialize, watch movies, and so on. Before their 10 p.m. bedtime, youth must take a shower. All youth are up by 7:30 a.m. to start their day.
