Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dear Y Family,
I love the Y! At our Grand Opening last April, I spoke about the gratitude and awe I felt for our YMCA and the Skagit community that we serve. That feeling remains strong!
When I say that I love the Y, I am not referring to our beautiful pools, gym, or wellness center. Instead, I am referring to how the Y is here for everyone! The Skagit Valley Family YMCA Mission states that our Y "creates positive community change by empowering the mind, body, and spirit of ALL."
Of ALL! I love that! Our Y is here for everyone and I am grateful for that fact. One Y serving one Skagit!
This week, I am reminded that we have a deep heritage of leaders whom we can follow in promoting equity and inclusion. On Monday, we remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who championed the American Civil Rights movement and whose impact remains essential today. In honor of MLK Day of Service, there are a number of opportunities to give back to our community.
·       Become a Y volunteer
·       Whatcom Creek Work Party
·       MLK Day March & Celebration
·       King Day at Northwest African American Museum
·       From Struggle to Survival: Creating Beauty Out of Tragedy
Our team keeps the goal of increasing inclusivity at the forefront of every decision they make. In doing so, I like Dr. King's statement:
“If you can’t fly, then run; if you can’t run, then walk; if you can’t walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”

—Martin Luther King Jr., April 13, 1956

Let's "keep moving forward" together, building a better Y, and a better Skagit, where ALL people are empowered and included.

PS. We are open at Hoag Rd on MLK Day!
