Membership Changes: Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about the upcoming changes to Membership at the Y

We will update this FAQ page as additional questions arise. (Last Updated: 2/2/23)

Rate Changes

The new rates will go into effect on March 1, 2023.

  • Adult Membership (ages 25-64): $70
  • 2 Adult Membership (ages 25-64): $100 **
  • Family Membership (1 adult): $100
  • Family Membership (2 adult): $130
  • Family Membership (3 adult): $160
  • (NEW!) Teen Membership (ages 13-19): $30*
  • (NEW!) Young Adult Membership (ages 20-24): $45

*The Teen Membership is replacing Youth Memberships. Current Youth Memberships will increase to $25/month effective March 1 and individuals with this membership can keep it until August 31, 2023. After August 31, youth under 13 will need to transition to be part of a family membership, or Adult/Senior/Senior Couple Memberships must pay a drop-in fee for accompanying youth(s).

** The 2 Adult Membership rate was accidentally left out of the physical mailer sent to members.

There’s no action required from you. Your bank draft or credit/debit card draft will automatically update to the new rate so you can continue to enjoy all the Y has to offer.

These increases are necessary to 1) hire and retain our hardworking staff that run the quality programs you enjoy and 2) help cover increased operating costs across our sites. In our industry, it’s standard to review rates every year, but our Y hasn’t updated our fees since spring 2020. This is our first increase in three years. Unlike other fitness providers in our industry, we don’t have binding membership contracts/agreements, and nor do we have plans to implement them at this time.

Information about rate changes was shared with all active members through a letter mailed to all households, in our member email, a blog post on the website, and on signage around the building. Communications were sent out with over 30 days’ notice, as prescribed in the membership handbook.

We have assessed market trends and operating costs on an annual basis since opening this facility in 2019, and we will continue to conduct these assessments on an annual basis as we always have. Moving forward, any future changes to membership rates will be made in tandem with our Y for All program to ensure families who need support are provided appropriate financial assistance. The policies within our Membership Handbook ensure members are given at least 30 days’ notice before any changes to membership fees.

Youth & Family Membership Changes

The Teen Membership (ages 13-19) is replacing Youth Memberships. We are excited that this new membership type will give teens increased access to the Y (and at a better price for 18- and 19-year-olds). Current Youth Memberships will increase to $25/month effective March 1, and this membership type will be completely phased out by August 31, 2023. The Welcome Center team will continue working through these transitions with current Youth Memberships between now and August 31, 2023.

After August 31, youth under 13 will need to be part of a Family Membership to use the facility, or individuals on Adult/Senior/Senior Couple Memberships must pay a drop-in fee for accompanying youth(s). Youth 12 and under may still use parts of the facility with adult supervision and can continue to exercise in the Wellness Center with medical clearance from a doctor.

Starting on March 1, 2023, our Youth Guidelines will be adjusted to reflect the access 13-year-olds will now additionally have in our spaces. Stay tuned for more information on these changes.

(Example Situation) My 8-year-old child participates in swim lessons and I pay a discounted fee because they have a Youth Membership. Will I still receive a discount on their registration fees?

A: Your child can remain on the Youth Membership type and continue to receive discounts on programs until August 31, 2023. After that date, the Youth Membership will be discontinued, and you’ll need to have a Family Membership to receive the discount.

In order to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all in our facilities, it is important children 12 and under be accompanied by an adult when engaged in strenuous activity and/or around open water. This also aligns with fitness industry and youth development best practices. The previous model of allowing Youth Memberships for ages 0-12 enabled children to access the facility without an accompanying adult. With these updated membership policies, we not only given youth ages 13 to 19 greater access to our facility for a better rate, but also encourage families with younger children to enjoy the Y together.

Yes! As of March 1, those with non-Family Memberships may now use our Y Kids @ Hoag child supervision service. The fee is $15 per session per child. Currently, Y Kids @ Hoag is not open to community members.

(Example Situation) I am a Senior Member, and I’m babysitting my 3-year-old grandson for the day. May I register for a fitness class and drop off my grandson for Y Kids while I work out?

A: Yes! As of March 1, you will now be able to drop off your grandson for Y Kids at Hoag for a $15 session. Pre-registration is going away, so Y Kids @ Hoag is drop-in only. If you arrive and our Y Kids Corner is at capacity, you may be asked to wait until a space opens up so that our staff can ensure safety at all times for the young ones.

A youth may stay on a Family Membership as a dependent through the end of their 18th year. Once youth turn 19, they will need to transition into either a Teen Membership or be added to the Family Membership as another Adult. Both options cost the same, as a Teen Membership is $30/month and each additional Adult in a family membership is also $30/month.

Drop-in/Community Member Changes

Yes. Starting on March 1, our daily drop-in fees are increasing to the following prices:

  • Under 5 Years Old: Free (with paying adult 18-years-old or older)
  • Youth (ages 6-12): $5
  • Teen (ages 13-19): $10
  • Adult (ages 20-64): $20
  • Senior (ages 65+): $15
  • Family: $40

Depending on the size of the group dropping-in, the type of drop-in will vary. Here are some examples of how the size and ages of the group may adjust the fee:

  • Family of 5 (2 adults, three teenagers)
    • Family Drop-In Fee: $40 (BETTER DEAL)
    • Paid Individually: $70
  • Family of 3 (one adult, two youth)
    • Family Drop-In Fee: $40
    • Paid Individually: $30 (BETTER DEAL)

Did You Know? If you’re a community member and drop-in to the Y multiple times per month, it may be cheaper to join as a member! For example, if you have a family of five (2 adults, 3 children) and visit the Y 4 times per month ($160 in drop-in fees), it’s a better deal to start a 2 Adult Membership  ($130/month). That way, the whole family can visit the Y as much as you’d like without paying more!
