Lifeguard Classes

The Skagit Valley Family YMCA has partnered with the American Red Cross to provide Lifeguarding courses at the Y.  You can find more information about these classes at the American Red Cross website.

Do you want to be a lifeguard but don’t want to pay for the training?  Email [email protected] to see what shifts we are hiring for…we may pay for your training and give you a job!

You do not need to be a member of the Y to register for these classes.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification-Blended Learning

This will be a blended Lifeguard course that utilizes both online content and classroom/pool time.  Provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over.

Prerequisites: Minimum age: 15 years; Swim 300 yards continuously; Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs; Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds by starting in the water, swimming 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, exit the water without using steps or a ladder.  No refunds if unable to pass the pre-test swim on the first day!

Participants who successfully complete the Lifeguarding course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, valid for 2 years.

Times:  Friday 6:00-9:30pm / Saturday and Sunday 10am – 7pm

You do not need to be a member of the YMCA to participate in this program.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Renewal

An abbreviated Lifeguarding course that briefly reviews course information and allows practice of skills and knowledge before testing. Current certification in Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED is required to participate in the review course. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED which is valid for 2 years.

You DO NOT need to be a member of the YMCA to participate in this program.

Lifeguarding And Waterfront Skills-Bended Learning

Provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over, including in aquatic facilities in non-surf, open-water areas found in public parks, resorts, summer camps, and campgrounds.

Lifeguarding Instructor/Instructor Trainer Review Course-Blended Learning

This in-person Instructor review course is the required course for all Lifeguarding Instructors to re-certify. During this course, Lifeguarding Instructors and Instructor Trainers will participate in an in-water practice and polish skills session in addition to a classroom-based review of Red Cross administrative policies and procedures. Lifeguarding Instructors may also choose to attend a brief “test out” session following this course to gain a basic-level Lifeguarding certification.

You do not need to be a member of the YMCA to register for this class.
