LIVESTRONG at the YMCA

The Y and the LIVESTRONG® Foundation joined together to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. The research-based program offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. In addition to physical benefits, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA helps people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is an evidence-based physical activity and wellness program for adult cancer survivors designed to support holistic recovery—spirit, mind, and body—after cancer diagnosis and treatment. The program offers participants a safe, supportive environment to build strength, flexibility, and confidence with specially trained YMCA coaches.

Any adult cancer survivor and those in cancer treatment, regardless of cancer type or treatment history. The program is designed for adults who have become de-conditioned from treatment or disease and want to reclaim their health.

Each participant must complete a 90-minute intake appointment with a LIVESTRONG at the YMCA coach and have a medical clearance form filled out by their physician before the start of the program.

Participants complete a personalized, 12-week small-group course meeting twice a week for 90 minutes at the Skagit Valley Family YMCA. The focus includes cardiovascular endurance, strength training, flexibility, balance, and emotional wellbeing, guided by individual assessments and motivational interviewing. Peer support and community connections are core components. Additionally, we will have guest speakers and special activities throughout the 12-week course, with topics such as nutrition, meditation, and more.
