When young people discover the power of their own voice, their potential to shape the future grows stronger. This winter, the Skagit Valley Family YMCA is proud to introduce a new way for teens to lead, learn, and make a lasting impact through our Youth & Government program.
Built on the YMCA’s mission to support youth development and civic engagement, Youth & Government gives high school students ages 13-18 the chance to step into the shoes of state leaders—writing bills, debating ideas, and learning how democracy works from the inside out. Through hands-on experience and mentorship, participants develop skills that extend far beyond the capitol: confidence in public speaking, respect for diverse perspectives, and a deep understanding of how communities come together to make a difference.
Each week, students will meet at the Y to discuss current issues, collaborate with peers, and prepare for the statewide Youth Legislature event in Olympia, which takes place in late April. Guided by local advisors and community mentors, participants will explore what it means to lead with integrity, compassion, and courage—values at the heart of the Y.
Over the coming months, our goal is to build a supportive space where teens feel seen, heard, and inspired to participate in civic life. Whether you dream of a career in government, want to strengthen your leadership skills, or simply want to make a difference where you live, Youth & Government offers a place to start.
The Y is committed to making programs like Youth and Government available to all. Y for All Discounts are available to qualifying families and we have additional scholarships available for qualifying families. To learn more, please email [email protected].
Families and teens interested in learning more can reach out to Elissa Eskridge, Youth Program Coordinator, at [email protected]. Together, we can help the next generation lead with purpose and passion—because our community is stronger when all voices are part of the conversation.
