The Skagit Valley Family YMCA has partnered with the American Red Cross to provide Lifeguarding courses at the Y. You can find more information about these classes at the American Red Cross website.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding & Waterfront Skills Recertification - Blended Learning
The primary purpose of a recertification course is to give participants who are currently certified American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) AND American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding the opportunity to review the course knowledge and skills within a formal course setting to maintain their American Red Cross Lifeguarding (including Deep Water) and Waterfront Lifeguarding certifications. This course is set up in a blended learning format, that utilizes both online content and classroom/pool time.
To enroll in the Lifeguarding & Waterfront Skills Recertification course, you must have a current certification or a certification expired by no more than 30 days for American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid, and a current certification or a certification expired by no more than 30 days for American Red Cross Waterfront Skills.
Pre-requisites
To participate in the Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) and Waterfront Lifeguarding Recertification course, participants must be at least 15 years of age. Participants will have to complete the Course Prerequisites at the start of the class:
- Jump in, submerge, resurface and swim 350 yards continuously, tread water for 2 minutes, and then swim 200 more yards. While swimming, you must keep your face in the water and demonstrate good breath control. You may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed. When treading, you must use only your legs.
- Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive (head-first or feet-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface. Swimming the distance underwater is not permitted. Exit the water without using a ladder or the steps.
- Complete an underwater swim. Swim goggles are not allowed. Starting in the water, swim 5 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. Submerge, swim underwater and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 feet of water. Return to the surface after picking up all three dive rings and continue to swim for another 5 yards to complete the sequence.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid and Waterfront Skills, valid for two years.
This course follows a blended learning model, which combines online coursework with in-person sessions. Within 48 hours of registration, you will receive an email from your instructor with instructions for accessing the online course content. Online content must be completed prior to the first in-person session. Proof of online completion will be required.
Refund Policy:
Refunds will not be given to students who do not complete or fail to bring proof of completion for the online work prior to the start of class on Friday. Refunds will also not be given to students who are unable to pass the required swimming pre-requisites. Within 48 hours of your registration, your instructor will send you an email with information on how to access the online content which must be completed prior to the start of class.
