Developing Young People Through STEM

The Y is helping all children reach their full potential by supporting their unique youth development journeys. At more than 1,000 YMCA sites nationwide, kids are engaged in year-round STEM activities that nurture their curiosity, inspire creativity and teach them how to succeed.

Kids who participate in STEM activities:

  • Learn how to solve problems
  • Develop critical-thinking skills
  • Become comfortable with failure and trying again
  • Learn to work successfully in teams
  • Develop self-confidence
  • Are able to see themselves in STEM careers

Learn how the Y is supporting equity in STEM to help every kid advance!

Robot Build!

All Locations
8/10/22 - 8/10/22

The Mount Vernon High School Robotics Team will host a hands-on robot build that will engage kids ages 6-12 by providing the resources to design, build and program a robot while helping them develop essential skills such as creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication.

We will have 10 robots that will allow hands on building and learning.  Once you register, you can come for all of the time or just the portion that works for you!  We encourage parents to stay and participate in the learning and building process.  We will build robots, program them, and test them in a series of events like an obstacle course.

There will be small challenges for groups that want to participate and free builds for those that just want to tinker and not compete.  No pressure here!

  • Builders will love building and coding their fully-functional robot to walk, talk, and even play games or complete tasks! This educational STEM robot toy makes engineering fun for everyone who builds it.
  • We will be using the LEGO EV3 which has 601 pieces and includes the intelligent EV3 Brick, 4 motors, plus color, touch and IR sensors.

The Interscholastic Mount Vernon Engineering Robotics Team (IMVERT) is a place welcome to all middle to high school students interested in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, business, communications, design, or just about anything! Our student membership represents a group of devoted young people from a diverse set of backgrounds.

Visit their website to find out more about the team and how you can get involved!
