Safety Around Water
Safety Around Water is a basic water safety program designed to reach children at risk of drowning, who are not able to exit the water safely on their own, or who haven’t taken swim lessons before. If your youth is already in our Swim Lessons program, Safety Around Water will not meet their needs. The program is intended to teach children, particularly those in underserved communities who are most at risk of drowning, how to be safe around water.
At the Y, we believe everyone should have the chance to learn how to stay safe around water. However, we realize that the cost of swim lessons can be a barrier to families. We are very grateful for the generous support of the YMCA of the USA’s Strategic Initiative Fund, which is providing scholarships for 100 children to attend free Safety Around Water classes. As part of this grant, we will be collecting some general data on participants to share with the YMCA-USA.
2024 SIF Scholarship Sessions
Safety Around Water consists of five lessons designed to teach kids ages 4-14 water safety skills that help reduce the risk of drowning and build their skills and confidence in and around water. This program is not a replacement for swim lessons, but is a good first step in water safety education for your child. A typical class can include:
- Exercises to help kids adjust to being in the water
- Instruction in two skill sets kids can use if they unexpectedly find themselves in the water: Jump, Push, Turn, Grab and Swim, float, swim.
- Safety topics like what to do if you see someone in the water who needs help
- Fun activities that reinforce skills
This program is funded by the YMCA of the USA Strategic Initiative Fund, which is providing scholarships to 100 children to participate in this program. As a condition of this grant, we will be collecting data about swimmers and sharing it with the Y-USA. Collected data will include demographic information, swimming ability, and session participation.
