Intro to Tabletop Loop Weaving with Elizabeth Moncrief
This program is intended to offer participants an appreciation of the weaving process and an acknowledgment of the skilled contributions developed over the last several thousand years. Liz will present some of the tools and techniques used in the art and craft of weaving beautiful cloth. We’ll also discuss some history of fabric production and how it played a role in early U.S. textile industries.
Participants will see a weaving loom in action in the form of a small, somewhat foldable table loom that is easily transportable. These small looms are a favorite for new weavers and are especially well-suited for Liz’s workshops. She’ll bring a few examples from different makers and will have one already “warped” and ready to weave. The process itself is somewhat time-intensive, involving planning a project, winding a warp, dressing the loom, threading, and sleying before even getting to the actual weaving.
Elizabeth (Liz) Moncrief (www.aweaversway.com) has offered workshops since the 1990s in weaving and dyeing for participants of all skill levels, both in-person and virtual. She has been an instructor for regional and national conferences including Inter-Mountain Weavers, Estes Wool Festival, Northwest Regional Spinners and Weavers, Montana Association of Weavers, FiberFestNW, Handweavers Guild of America, Mid-Atlantic Fiber Association, Skagit Valley College, and Ohio and Vermont State Guilds, along with several smaller guilds in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. With the advent of Zoom, she also regularly offers virtual workshops in computer weave-drafting.
Liz designs for the Silk Weaving Studio in Vancouver, writes occasionally for Handwoven magazine, and sells her woven pieces through several venues and art shows. She has received awards from Complex Weavers (2016 & 2021), a national organization, and was invited as a featured artist in Arts Alive LaConner in 2023 and 2025, earning a People’s Choice Award in an open show in 2024.
Liz delights in teaching and bringing new challenges to her students. She happily weaves on 8-, 12-, and 24-shaft computerized looms in her studio and enjoys welcoming visitors to see “how it’s done.”
