Outdoor Basics at Camp Anderson
Build your camping confidence!
Looking to learn the essentials of camping or brush up on your outdoor know-how? This 3.5-hour, hands-on class is the perfect introduction for adults and families who want to feel more comfortable spending a night outdoors.
Together, we’ll cover the fundamentals:

Setting up camp – Learn how to choose a site, pitch a tent, and organize your gear for comfort and safety.

Fire building and safety – Practice starting and maintaining a campfire using different methods and materials.

Outdoor cooking – Prepare and enjoy simple meals using camp stoves, fire pits, and foil-packet recipes.

Practical tips and Leave No Trace – Discover how to stay comfortable, respect the environment, and handle common camping challenges.
Camp Anderson’s forested setting provides the perfect space to practice these skills with guidance from our outdoor education staff. Expect a relaxed, interactive experience with plenty of time for questions, demonstrations, and hands-on practice.
Whether you’re getting ready for your first camping trip or looking to make your next adventure smoother and safer, you’ll leave feeling prepared, confident, and excited to explore the outdoors.

Family Trail Adventures
Join the Skagit Y for Family Trail Adventures, a new guided hiking program designed for first-timers and seasoned hikers alike. Come discover how outdoor adventures can bring your family closer while building lifelong connections in our Y community.
- These hikes are designed for families of all experience levels. Whether it’s your first time on a trail or you’re seasoned hikers, everyone is welcome. Each outing is led at a family-friendly pace, with games, nature highlights, and activities provided by YMCA staff to keep kids and parents engaged. Recommended kids ages: 5-14
- Hikes are light to moderate in difficulty, and children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please bring comfortable shoes, water, and weather-appropriate clothing.
- Shuttle service to the trailhead, trail guidance, games and activities, community connection, and fun for the whole family!
Fall 2025 Hikes (cost is per person, so if attending with multiple family members, please register each member separately)
Hike 1 (Saturday, November 8): Little Mountain (3.2 Miles)
Hike 2 (Saturday, November 15): Padilla Bay Shore Trail (3.5 Miles)
Hike 3 (Saturday, November 22): Clear Lake Hill (3 Miles)
All hikes will depart from the main YMCA at 10am (1901 Hoag Rd, Mount Vernon, WA 98273).
